Ona medieval history of an abbey

Ona is located 65 kilometers from Burgos, in the region of the Merindades, located in a valley of great beauty. It’s a town of medieval aspect which has barely a thousand inhabitants. The beauty of its historic centre attracts each weekend to numerous groups of tourists.

What will surprise most visitors is undoubtedly impressive Main Square dominated by the Abbey of San Salvador. The monastery, which was founded in 1011 by Count Sancho Garcia Castilla, it is visit with the guided. You can read about it in the tourist office (947 30 00 01). Inside you can visit the church, whose nave welcomes the coffins of eight counts, kings of Castile, infants, bishops …, the cloister one of the most significant places, which was designed by Juan de Cologne and the Museum, a place of great beauty, with very interesting samples like a tapestry of the tenth century or different and Flemish gothic panels, among others. The remainders of what was its wall; the door of the star; the Municipal Museum and the church of San Juan, in the main square they complete the monumental assembly of the village.

After so much art, it is time to mention the large festive calendar which has this town. Although August is particularly strong in this regard, we must emphasize the Chronic on of Ona, a representation that has more than 20 editions and is declared of regional tourist Interest. In a scenario of emergency as the church of San Salvador and more than 120 actors, tells the story of the people of Ona. The staging is accompanied by a nice set of lights, colors and sounds.
